Filosofie is wezenlijk historisch. Zo zijn de verwondering die haar drijft en haar “eeuwige” vragen gebonden aan de specifieke context waarin ze ontstaan. De antwoorden zijn interpretaties van de werkelijkheid ingegeven door de tijdsgeest én door confrontatie met vroegere beschouwingen. Om het met de woorden van G.W.F. Hegel te zeggen: “Die Philosophie ist ihre Zeit in Gedanken erfasst.” Daarnaast is de geschiedenis ook wezenlijk voor de wijsbegeerte omdat de historiciteit zelf een onderdeel vormt van de filosofische reflectie. Onze omgang met de geschiedenis situeert zich, net zoals deze historische inleiding tot de wijsbegeerte, tegen de achtergrond van onze tijdsgeest.Europese wijsbegeerte. Een historische inleiding bespreekt de historiciteit van de filosofie in deze dubbele betekenis. Het eerste deel geeft een overzicht van de filosofische rationaliteit van de Griekse oudheid tot de hedendaagse periode. Het tweede deel benadert wijsbegeerte als historisch-hermeneutische wetenschap. Deze herziene editie biedt ook ruimte aan actuele thema’s zoals canon, diversiteit, feminisme en postkolonialisme.Gerd Van Riel is als gewoon hoogleraar antieke filosofie verbonden aan het Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte (De Wulf-Mansioncentrum) van de KU Leuven.
